    Any business entity operating in the Catering Undertaking and/or Retail sector, whether presently implementing or considering the introduction of a BYOC (Bring Your Own Container) initiative within their operational framework. Under the BYOC program, registered economic operators are encouraged to accept reusable containers from customers in exchange for a financial incentive at the time of purchase. A non-exhaustive list of potential financial incentives as outlined:

    • Discounts.
    • Loyalty programs.
    • Additional content.
    • Etc.

  • What types of containers can be used in BYOC initiatives?

    Reusable containers can be used in the BYOC initiative. A reusable container is a type of container designed and intended for multiple uses over an extended period rather than for single or limited use. These containers are typically constructed from durable materials such as plastic, glass, metal, or other materials that can withstand repeated use and cleaning without significant deterioration.

    Suitable containers should be clean, leak-proof, and made from materials like stainless steel, glass, BPA-free plastic, and durable silicone or ceramic. Container for foodstuff should be food grade as stipulated by EC 1935/2006. Tight-sealing lids may be mandatory for self-care products, cleaning products, paints, and DIY products. Check with the refill station or store for specific guidelines. Reusable containers must have no cracks or chips, stains, strong odours, warped or misshapen, corrosion, visible mould or mildew.

    Yes, if it’s designed and produced for reuse and meets food-grade standards as stipulated by EC 1935/2006.

  • How should individuals sanitize and prepare their containers for reuse?

    i. Clean: Wash the container thoroughly with hot, soapy water to remove any food
    residue and debris.
    ii. Rinse: Rinse the container under clean, running water to remove soap residue and
    particles.
    iii. Sanitize: Choose one method:

    • Dishwasher: Run the container through a hot water cycle with detergent.
    • Boiling Water: Submerge the container in boiling water for 2-3 minutes.
    • Bleach Solution: Mix 1 tablespoon bleach with 1 gallon water, soak the container for 2 minutes, then rinse

    iv. Air Dry: Allow the container to air dry upside down on a clean surface.
    v. Store: Keep the sanitized container in a clean, dry place until ready to use.

  • Is it possible for establishments to reject the customer’s reusable containers?

    Yes, it is possible. Your reusable container needs to be clean and safe for use and the Economic Operator has the right to refuse unclean and unsafe containers.
    Your container may not be accepted if it shows cracks or chips, stains, strong odours, warping or misshaping, corrosion, made of non-food-grade materials, visible mold, or mildew.

  • Are there restrictions on container sizes?

    Containers should generally be of an appropriate size for easy dispensing and should not exceed the maximum allowed volume. Check with the refill station or store for specific guidelines on container sizes and materials for various products, along with beverage serving size standards.

  • Where can I find suitable containers for BYOC initiatives?

    Suitable containers can be purchased at various retailers including supermarkets, zero-waste stores, and online shops, ensuring compatibility with intended products.

  • When should my reusable containers be changed?

    Consider the particular lifespan of your container. Examine for missing lids, lingering odours, stubborn stains, physical deterioration such as splits, fractures, chips, twisted or deformed, corrosion, or mildew.
